The Woman in Black – the story: Above the windswept reaches of the salt marshes beyond Nine Lives Causeway stands the solitary, foreboding Eel Marsh House. Its sole inhabitant, Mrs Alice Drablow, is dead. Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral, knowing nothing of the tragic world of secrets which lie hidden behind the shuttered windows. At the funeral he glimpses a wasted young woman dressed all in black, and feels a creeping sense of unease. Who is the woman in black, and why are the locals so reluctant to speak of her? His fears grow as he discovers more about the mysterious woman, and her terrible purpose. In another era, an old man tries to tell a story to a stranger, in an attempt to exorcise the ghosts of a long–dead past. The old man's name is Arthur Kipps...
